Speechify's free tier is one of the most common entry points to text-to-speech. Millions of people download the app, try the free version, and then face a decision: upgrade to Premium at $139 per year, or look for something else.
That decision is not straightforward. The free tier is restrictive enough to feel like a demo, but $139 is a significant annual commitment for any utility app. This breakdown covers exactly what you get at each tier so you can make an informed choice.
What Speechify Free Includes
The free tier gives you access to the app and basic functionality, but with meaningful limitations.
Basic voices. You get access to a small selection of voices, and they are noticeably lower quality than the Premium AI voices. These are the older-generation voices that sound more robotic -- functional, but not pleasant for extended listening.
Limited speed options. Free users get speed control, but the range is restricted compared to Premium.
Core features. You can paste text, type text, or use the browser extension to read web pages. The fundamental TTS functionality works.
Platform access. The app is available on all platforms even for free users, but the experience is heavily gated behind upgrade prompts.
Character limits. Free usage is capped, though the exact limits have shifted over time. Expect to hit walls fairly quickly with regular use.
What free does not include
- AI neural voices (the natural-sounding ones)
- Celebrity voices
- Audiobook access
- OCR/camera scanning
- Voice cloning
- AI summaries
- Advanced integrations (Google Docs, Outlook)
- Priority customer support
- Offline listening
The free tier is essentially a preview. It shows you what the app does, but the quality gap between free and Premium voices is large enough that regular use on the free tier is frustrating. This is by design -- it is meant to convert you.
What Speechify Premium Adds
Premium unlocks the full Speechify experience for $139 per year (roughly $11.58/month, billed annually).
AI Voices
This is the primary reason people upgrade. Speechify Premium includes dozens of high-quality neural voices that sound natural, with proper cadence and emphasis. The difference between free voices and Premium AI voices is immediately obvious. Celebrity voice options (like Snoop Dogg and Gwyneth Paltrow) are also included at this tier.
Unlimited Usage
No character caps or daily limits. Convert as much content as you want.
Audiobook Library
Access to Speechify's growing audiobook catalog. The selection is smaller than Audible's but is included in the subscription at no extra cost.
Advanced Features
- OCR scanning -- point your camera at physical text
- Voice cloning -- create synthetic versions of voices
- AI summaries -- get condensed versions of long content
- Advanced integrations -- Google Docs, Outlook, Gmail, Canvas
- Offline listening -- download audio for listening without internet
- Note-taking and bookmarking -- annotate while listening
Speed Control
Premium unlocks the full speed range, up to 4.5x playback.
The Hidden Costs and Upsells
Even after paying $139, some Speechify users report encountering additional upsells within the app. This is worth understanding before you commit.
Audiobook credits. While the audiobook library is included, some titles or features within the audiobook section may prompt additional purchases.
Voice packs. Certain premium voice options may be positioned as add-ons beyond the base Premium subscription.
Enterprise features. Team and enterprise features are priced separately, which is standard but worth noting if you expected all features included.
Trial conversion. Speechify frequently offers free trial periods. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, you are automatically charged the full annual price. This is standard practice in subscription apps, but the number of complaints about unexpected charges in App Store reviews suggests the cancellation process could be clearer.
Watch trial expiration dates
If you start a Speechify free trial, set a calendar reminder for two days
before it expires. Several App Store reviewers report being charged
unexpectedly after forgetting to cancel.
When the Premium Upgrade Makes Sense
Speechify Premium is worth $139 if you check most of these boxes:
You use TTS daily. If text-to-speech is a core part of your daily routine -- not occasional use, but a regular habit -- the premium voices and unlimited usage pay for themselves in listening comfort.
You need multiple platforms. If you switch between iPhone, Windows laptop, and Chrome browser throughout the day, Speechify's cross-platform Premium experience is genuinely seamless.
You read diverse content types. Articles, PDFs, physical textbooks (OCR), Google Docs, emails -- if your TTS needs span multiple formats and sources, Speechify covers them all in one subscription.
You use the audiobook library. If you would otherwise pay for Audible ($14.95/mo), the audiobook access included in Speechify Premium adds real value to the subscription.
Accessibility is essential. For users with dyslexia, visual impairments, or other reading difficulties who depend on TTS throughout their day, Speechify Premium's comprehensive feature set is hard to match.
When an Alternative Makes More Sense
For many users, $139 buys more than they need. Here are the scenarios where switching to a different tool is the pragmatic choice.
You primarily listen to articles
If web articles and newsletters are 80% or more of your TTS usage, you are paying for a Swiss Army knife when you need a screwdriver. speakeasy costs $89.99/yr (or $9.99/mo) and is purpose-built for this exact use case. Neural voice quality, RSS feed support, iCloud sync, and no account required. You save roughly $50 per year and get a more focused experience.
You want good free TTS
Apple's built-in Speak Screen is free on every iPhone and Mac. Enable it in Accessibility settings, swipe down with two fingers, and your device reads the screen aloud. The enhanced downloadable voices sound decent, and everything processes on-device. It lacks article extraction and library management, but for occasional use, it is remarkably capable at zero cost.
If you only use an iPhone and a Mac, Speechify's cross-platform advantage does not apply to you. iOS-focused apps like speakeasy or Voice Dream Reader deliver strong experiences on Apple devices without the premium price.
You need document TTS specifically
Voice Dream Reader costs $14.99 as a one-time purchase and handles PDFs, Word documents, and EPUBs excellently. If documents are your primary TTS content, one payment of $14.99 versus $139 every year is a straightforward value calculation.
You want the best voice quality possible
ElevenLabs Reader offers superior voice synthesis technology. Their voices are the most natural-sounding in the consumer market. If voice quality matters more than feature breadth, ElevenLabs delivers more on that specific axis.
The Decision Framework
Here is a simple way to think about it:
| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|
| Need TTS across 3+ platforms daily | Speechify Premium |
| Primarily listen to articles on iPhone | speakeasy |
| Need document/PDF TTS | Voice Dream Reader |
| Want the best voice quality | ElevenLabs Reader |
| Occasional TTS, budget-conscious | Apple Speak Screen (free) |
| Want usable free TTS on all platforms | NaturalReader free tier |
The question is not whether Speechify Premium is a good product -- it is. The question is whether it is the right product for your specific use case at $139 per year. For many users, a more focused or more affordable alternative delivers equal or better value for the subset of features they actually use.
Test the free tiers first
Before committing to any paid TTS plan, spend a week using free options:
Speechify's free tier, speakeasy's 3 weekly articles, and Apple's Speak
Screen. You will quickly learn what features you actually need versus what
seemed appealing in theory.
